Fortis Shalimar Bagh successfully launches the Kidney Transplant Program (KTP)

Successfully conducts two kidney transplants on the first day

Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh launched the Kidney Transplant Program (KTP) to offer clinical solutions for people suffering from renal or nephrological disorders in and around North West Delhi and surrounding cities like Hissar, Panipat, Karnal and Sonepat. The hospital flagged off the program by conducting two successful kidney transplants on the day of the launch, on a 61 year old Nigerian national and on a 24 year old patient from Delhi. The program includes an eight day stay for the recipient where the donor will also be accommodated for four days.

The 61 year old male patient belonged to Republic of Uganda. He had been suffering from diabetes mellitus and hypertension with End Stage Renal Disease and had also been started on maintenance haemodialysis for last 8 months in his home country. When he came to know of the kidney transplant option he came to India to get treated. The donor was 31 years old and related to the patient. The second patient was a 24 years old lady from India. She had been diagnosed with advanced renal failure and bilateral kidney damaged. Suffering from decreased appetite since one month and She was developed sudden and severe breathlessness. She had no past history of diabetes, hypertension, pulmonology or tuberculosis. She was on twice weekly hemo-dialysis. The donor was her 32 years brother who donated his kidney to her.

The clinical excellence team of doctors is led by Dr. Rajeev Sood, Director, Department of Urology & Renal Transplant Surgery, Fortis Healthcare. Dr. Sood is supported by the Department of Nephrology comprising of Dr. Dinesh Mittal, Senior Consultant, Dr. Manoj Arora, Consultant and Dr. Deepak Kalra, Consultant.

The transplant team is further supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure at the hospital with advanced technology and transplant ICU and a newly built operation theatre. The team is also ably assisted by well-trained transplant nurses trained to extend the best post-operative care with strict adherence to the Fortis policy of patient safety.

It is estimated that around 200,000 kidneys are needed every year in India and only about 2-3% patients get it. An estimated 50% of all organ donation needs could be met by simply using donated organs from road accident victims. Twelve people die a day waiting for a new kidney as more than 100,000 people are on the list for kidney transplants according to the National Kidney Foundation. Less than 17,000 kidney transplants are performed every year in the nation.
