First Cadaver Kidney Transplants conducted in Punjab.

In a significant development for healthcare in Punjab, twin successful kidney transplants were recently conducted at Fortis Hospital Mohali. This marks a new era for not only Punjab but also for the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal, Punjab, adjoining Haryana and Uttarakhand. The cadaver kidney transplants were conducted by the Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Dr Priyadarshi Ranjan, and team. The donor was a young male of 30 years, a labourer by profession belonging to the state of Haryana, who was admitted to PGI after a road traffic accident and was declared brain dead.

Elaborating upon the experience of the state’s first cadaver transplant, Dr Ranjan said the cadaver transplant programme in the entire Northern region is in a state of infancy and there are hundreds of organs, which go wasted every day. “This is a sorry state as there are almost double number of patients in the waiting list who keep on dying the same day in want of vital organs like Liver, Kidney and Heart. Globally, Spain is considered as the world’s benchmark for cadaver organ donation, as they have the highest cadaver transplant rates in the world,” said Dr Ranjan. He recently returned from Barcelona, Spain after a special training on Cadaver Kidney Transplantation. “We have studied the cadaver transplant programme model thoroughly from Spain and need to implement it in our country and states. Every brain dead patient is bound to be an organ donor in Spain as mandated by the law and is mentioned on his or her driving license,” he added.

This is a good beginning for the state as well as in this part of the country as till date it was impossible to conduct such kidney transplants in Punjab, until recently wherein the Government of India has initiated the National programme for cadaver organ donation called NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization). “In this case, the kidneys were allotted to us from PGI Chandigarh, through the NOTTO, when suitable patients were not available there,” said Dr Ranjan.

On the occasion, Dr Ranjan introduced the two patients who underwent the successful kidney transplants and have recovered well.
