FMRI wins award for ‘Green Hospital’ for 2014 from Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI)

Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurgaon, the flagship hospital of Fortis Healthcare Limited, has bagged the award for “Green Hospital” for 2014 from Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI), an apex national body of hospitals. The award was presented to the hospital by the Honourable Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana, Shri ESL Narsimhangaru at the Global Healthcare convention organized by AHPI in Hyderabad recently.

  • FMRI’s present lighting load is 373 KW (all CFL). The hospital is also undertaking a process of converting it to LED in a phase manner. By converting it to LED the hospital will be saving 1500 units per day considering lights are on for 12hs average. This has started with ICU-7. 
  • FMRI use timers to switch ON/OF the premises and terrace lights, which also results in energy saving and better utilization of manpower.
  • FMRI recycles waste water through STP in horticulture/cooling tower/flushing. On an average, FMRI recycles a lakh litre of water daily. This recycling process increases during summers.
  • FMRI has 13 rain water harvesting pits to conserve the rain/storm water during monsoon.

 

The rating system, recognized to be amongst the most stringent in the world, evaluates building projects on several aspects of environmental sustainability. It emphasizes the use of recycled and low energy consuming materials, on energy efficient designs and on the deployment of solar energy. Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) is India’s National Rating System for green building ‘design evaluation system’ and was conceived by TERI, along with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

FMRI is a next generation hospital that was constructed with optimal building design. The use of low emissivity glass for the building envelop, deployment of solar energy for lighting and hot water, and use of highly energy efficient fixtures and equipment managed centrally by a computer based building management system make it a Green Hospital. The key highlights include deployment of autoclaved aerated blocks in building construction, low energy materials and low volatile organic compound paints in interior finishes and minimizing the use of ozone depleting substances. The hospital has measures put in place for water conservation that include reuse of treated water, provision of water harvesting pits for ground water regeneration, conformity to the noise level standards both inside and outside of the hospital.

Dr Dilpreet Brar, Regional Director, FMRI, said, “This award is a recognition to the various initiatives that we have put in place in this hospital to conserve natural resources through optimal utilization and recycling of possible options. We are very happy that we have met the tough norms of the auditors who reviewed us for our STP for recycling waste water, maximum use of LED lightings, rainwater harvesting pits and techniques used during the project stage for conserving soil and water. We have strictly adhered to stringent standards in the use of eco-friendly construction materials and design.”

FMRI provides the next-generation of super-specialisation in Oncology, Trauma and Paediatric care with embedded centres of excellence at the hospital in Neurosciences, Minimal Access Surgery, Cardiac Sciences and Orthopaedics. FMRI has been exploring new frontiers in healthcare using a multi-disciplinary approach to clinical diagnosis, interventions and treatment outcomes.

The 450-bedded multi-super specialty, quaternary care hospital has been recognized as a Green Building and awarded FOUR STAR rating by TERI GRIHA in the past.
