Jaipur, 29 September 2022: Every year September 29 is observed as World Heart Day to raise awareness on heart diseases and the importance of cardiac health. To create awareness on heart health, Fortis Escorts Jaipur organized an interactive session ‘Dil ki Baat’. The session was chaired by Dr. R. K. Tongia, Director and Head of the Department of Cardiology, Fortis Jaipur alongwith renowned Cardiac Sciences team from Fortis Jaipur -Dr. Sunil K Kaushal, Director & Head Pediatrics CTVS, Dr. Rakesh Chittora, Director & Unit Head CTVS, Dr. Rahul Singhal, Additional Director Cardiology & Electrophysiology, Dr. Rahul Sharma, Additional Director Interventional Cardiology, Dr. Amit Kumar Singhal, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiology, Dr. Sanjay Khatri, Additional Director Pediatric Cardiology and Dr. Ashwini Sharma, Consultant Interventional Cardiology. The discussion revolved around lifestyle changes required for a healthy heart, risk factors and preventive measures.

Elaborating on the symptoms of heart disease that one should be mindful of Dr. R. K. Tongia, Director & Head of the Department of Cardiology, Fortis Jaipur said, “Cardinal symptoms of a heart attack are chest pain that radiates normally across the jaw to the left side of the arm, shortness of breath, increased heart rate and fainting. However, some patients have atypical symptoms like stomach ache, nausea, vomiting or generalized fatigue, where the muscles of a heart become weak and its function is compromised resulting in slower blood circulation.”

Citing the reasons why heart attacks have increased lately, Dr. Rakesh Chittora, Director & Unit Head, Cardiac Thoracic Vascular Surgery at Fortis Jaipur said, “The rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases is alarming. There is a need to raise public awareness about the necessity of living a healthy lifestyle. In the present times, we are witnessing a steep rise in heart attacks among 30 to 40 year old which wasn’t the case earlier. Currently, stress levels are much higher than in previous generations, which is one of the biggest factors that cause palpitations, anxiety, and phobia. These factors were almost absent some 20-odd years ago. Another factor is the consumption of tobacco products and smoking which has grown exponentially over the past decades.”

As per ‘Incidence of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in an Indian Urban Cohort’, coronary heart disease prevalence rates in India have been estimated over the past several decades and have ranged from 1.6% to 7.4% in rural populations and from 1% to 13.2% in urban population. As per the World Health Organization, India reported 63% of total deaths due to non-communicable diseases in 2016, of which 27% were attributed to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). CVDs also account for 45% of deaths in the 40 -69  age group.
