Fortis Escorts organizes Walkathon for creating awareness about Heart Healthy Environment

On the occasion of World Heart Day, Fortis Escorts Hospital organized a Walkathon in order to create awareness about heart diseases to create heart healthy environment in the city. More than 1000 citizens of Amritsar participated in this Walkathon to create a buzz around growing prevalence of Cardio Vascular Diseases (CVD). It tried to establish how walking and physical activity, in addition to healthy diet & lifestyle, can prevent one from falling prey to heart ailments. The enthusiastic participants were from all sections of the society including members of Daily Walkers Association, traders association, college students, nurses & renowned doctors of the city. The walk was led by the Medical Director Dr. H. P. Singh, Medical Director along with Dr. Pinak Moudgil, Facility Director and all the senior doctors of the hospital. The walk began from Company Bagh via Lawrence road to DAV College for women before culminating at the starting point.

The Cardio Vascular Diseases (CVD) is one of the most alarming non communicable diseases (NCDs) that is responsible for biggest cause of death among Indians. According to World Health Organization (WHO), one of the top causes of death in India is Ischemic Heart Disease; i.e. 12.4%. This is alarming when most of the people are not aware of the basic symptoms of a heart attack. Another recent survey conducted by Fortis revealed that 68% lacked awareness about radiating pain in jaw, arms, shoulders, abdomen & back and 85% lacked awareness about nausea associated Epigastric (upper abdominal) pain – important symptoms of a Heart Attack. The need for such awareness Walkathon become immense when the same survey revealed that the knowledge of symptoms or awareness is weakest amongst the young respondents (18-25yrs) with least importance given to radiating pain in jaw, arms, shoulders, abdomen and back at 27%.
