Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi Witnesses City’s 42nd Cadaver Donation

Surgeons at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi yesterday conducted their 1st Kidney Transplant on a 56yr old male, from Bhiwandi. The recipient was waitlisted for over three months and was on Dialysis for the past two years. Suffering from End-stage Renal Disease(ERD), a Kidney transplant procedure was absolutely essential to save his life. The transplant became possible when a 66yr old female, admitted at the hospital, was declared brain dead following Subarachnoid Hemorrhage(Brain Hemorrhage) yesterday.

The family, upon counselling, consented to donate their kin’s organs, a noble gesture that saved and enriched lives of many. The donated Kidneys and Liver were transplanted into three deserving patients and the Corneas were sent to an Eye Bank. The team that harvested the Kidney and transplanted it into the recipient suffering from ERD, comprised of Dr Sumit Mehta, Consultant Urologist & Transplant Surgeon, Dr Ramesh Mahajan, Consultant Urologist & Transplant surgeon and Dr Atul Ingale, Nephrologist, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi. Speaking about the transplant surgery, Dr Sumit Mehta, said, “The recipient is now stable and has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit. Next 48-72 hours will be critical and we will monitor the patient’s condition round the clock”.

On the occasion of the hospitals 1st Kidney transplant surgery Dr Bipin Chevale, Zonal Director, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi & S L Raheja Hospital, Mumbai, said, “We are very proud of our team of our Renal Transplant Surgeons, our Nephrologist and the kin of the donor, who made this transplant a reality. The spirited donor family has helped save and enrich lives of many deserving patients, this golden example will encourage many more families to follow suit – we are indebted to them. This progressive development is a fruition of our efforts towards building momentum for Organ Donation and we will, with our transplant team, continue on our endeavor to save and enrich the lives of wait-listed recipients”.

This transplant was made possible with support from the donor’s family, Medical Social Workers, team of clinicians at the hospital and Dr Sujata Patwardhan, General Secretary, Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee, who worked relentlessly to make this transplant happen.
