Fortis Hospital Jaipur performs successful SWAP living donor kidney transplant, saves lives of two
Jaipur, 26 December 2022: A kidney swap transplant was successfully performed at Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur, where a woman from Jaipur and a man from Jhunjhunu required a kidney transplant and were looking for suitable donors, as there was a mismatch with their respective recipient family members due to blood group incompatibility.A team of doctors led by Dr. Sandeep Gupta, Additional Director, Urology and Kidney Transplant andDr. Rajesh Kumar Garsa, Senior Consultant, Nephrology and Kidney Transplantat Fortis Hospital Jaipurassessed the case and found that the organs could be swapped between the two families as the blood groups matched. A swap transplant procedure was recommended, post both the families gave their consent. Doctors performed the swap transplant with the help of laparoscopic technique and both the patients were discharged after 3 days of the surgery.
A kidney swap transplant is a procedure where a living kidney donor, if incompatible with a recipient of his/her own family, exchanges kidneys with another donor-recipient pair. These live donor transplants occur simultaneously, as it is essentially an exchange of organs between two families, who cannot donate to their own family members because of blood group mismatch.
Speaking about the swap surgeries, Dr. Sandeep Gupta, Additional Director, Urology and Kidney Transplant, Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur said, “When there is a mismatch of blood groups, one of the options is a swap transplant, which is a challengingprocedure. However, what is crucial is that both the families; mother-daughter and the couple who recognized the need for the SWAP transplant and mutually agreed to the same and acted in the nick of time to save the lives of their dear ones.”
It is estimated that almost 5 lakh Indians face organ failure every year and only 2-3 percent receive a life-saving transplant. Every year, hundreds of people die in India, waiting for an organ transplant. Due to lack of awareness and misconceptions, there is a shortage of organ donors and with each passing year, the gap between the number of organs donated and the people waiting for a transplant, is growing wider.
