Fortis Hospital, Mulund conducts City’s 32nd Heart Transplant in the World Heart Week

Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, performed Mumbai’s record 32nd heart transplant surgery on a 23 year old male from Pune, suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy on the eve of World Heart Day today. The patient has been waitlisted for over two months. The transplant became possible when a 25 year male old donor from Mumbai, studying at Pune, was declared brain-dead following an Acute Intracerebral Hemorrhage. His family consented to donate his Heart, Kidneys, Liver and Corneas, to save and enrich lives of six deserving recipients.

Retrieved by Transplant Team at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, the donor heart was transported to the hospital, through the Green Corridor in 1 hr 03 mins. The harvested heart was transported out of Ruby Hall Hospital, Pune at 01.44 AM, reaching Pune Airport at 01.51 AM. The charter flight landed in Mumbai at 02.30 AM, reaching Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 02.47 AM. The preserved heart was immediately taken into the Operation Theatre and successfully implanted by Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, into the young recipient.

On successful completion of the heart transplant surgery, conducting surgeon, Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “The donor’s family deserves highest appreciation for having saved so many lives through their noble gesture. Our young patient is now stable and has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit. Next 48-72 hours will be critical and we will be closely monitoring him.”
