Fortis Hospital, Mulund conducts Mumbai’s 24th Heart Transplant

Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund today conducted city’s 24th successful heart transplant surgery on a 29 year old female from Satara, Maharashtra. The patient was on waitlist for about five weeks as she was suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy. A heart transplant surgery was absolutely essential as her condition continued to deteriorate rapidly. The recipient received a new life when the 34 year old resident of Surat was declared brain dead at Ayush ICU and Multispecialty Hospital, Surat. The donor died following a head injury incurred in a road traffic accident.

The family of the deceased consented to donate their kin’s Heart, Kidneys, Liver and Corneas to save lives of six deserving recipients. Post assessment and evaluation, the heart was harvested. It was finally transported from Ayush ICU and Multispecialty Hospital, Surat at 02:00 AM as it reached the airport at 02:17 AM. The Chartered flight took off at 02:20 AM landing in Mumbai at 03.02AM. The donor heart reached Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 03.21AM and into the OT at 03.22AM.

Speaking about the transplant surgery, conducting surgeon, Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “The recipient is stable and has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit. Next 48-72 hours will be critical and the patient will be monitored round the clock. It is yet another beautiful example set by a spirited family. This is what drives Organ Donation programmes across the country. Donor families are instrumental in driving the change, giving hope to the wait-listed patients.”

This transplant was made possible with support from Maharashtra and Gujarat’s Airport and Traffic Authorities, Dr Gauri Rathod, Asst. Director, Health Services, Ministry of Health, Non-Government Organisation ‘Donate Life’ who helped counsel the donor’s family, Medical Social Workers and the Medical Teams at both the hospitals who worked relentlessly to make this transplant happen.
