Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurgaon, Asia’s leading quaternary care hospital, in partnership with Philips Healthcare India, kicked off its third, three-day symposium on ‘Advanced MR Imaging Techniques with Focus on Pediatrics’ today. The symposium was organized under the aegis of Indian Chapter of International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) was inaugurated by Dr. Jim Pipe -Director, Barrow Neurological Institute, Arizona, USA and the President-elect of the annual meeting of ISMRM 2016. The symposium will focus on improving lives by learning and taking advantage of the latest innovations in the field of Pediatric MRI to address the issue of Indian populations’ local clinical needs. Radiologists will discuss and deliberate on Dr. Pipe’s vision on how to bring down the MRI examination time from 30 to 5 minutes.

The conference brings together renowned international experts to deliberate upon the latest ground breaking innovations in the field of Pediatric MRI with special reference to advanced MR Techniques applicable on Neurology, Musculoskeletal System and Body Imaging. International speakers in the conference include renowned Radiologists and MRI Scientists like Dr. Jim Pipe (Director, Barrow Neurological Institute, Arizona, USA and the President-elect of the annual meeting of ISMRM 2016 in Singapore), Dr. Tim Leiner (Utrecht University Medical Center, The Netherlands), Dr. Tatsu Niwa (Tokai University Medical School, Japan) and Dr. Ponnada Narayana (University of Texas Houston, USA) among others. In 2011 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA) developed an image processing algorithm which reduced the time from 45 to 15 minutes. To reduce this time, the new image-processing algorithm uses data from the first scan to predict the likely position of the boundaries between different types of tissue in the subsequent scans.

Dr. R K Gupta, Director and HOD, Radiology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), said, “The aim of the symposium is to focus on breakthrough advancements in the field of MR Imaging in Pediatrics. MRI examinations of children require a particular set of skills and expertise in order to successfully obtain diagnostic images with minimal distress to the patients and their family. We are the only hospital in India to offer a whole body MR Imaging with m-DIXON and DWIBS, a path breaking technology.”

Dr. Dilpreet Brar, Regional Director, FMRI, said, “MRI examinations of children require a particular set of skills and expertise in order to successfully obtain diagnostic images with minimal distress to the patients and their family.
