Mumbai warms up to Organ Donation with 11th Heart Transplant in 48hrs

Fortis Hospital, Mulund performed Mumbai’s record 11th heart transplant on a 36 year old male from Lonavla who was suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The patient has been on the waiting list for over two months and a heart transplant was essential to save his life. The patient got a new lease of life when the heart of a 38 year old donor from Panvel was donated by his family after the donor succumbed to complications arising out of a head injury sustained during a road accident.

A 19Km green corridor was created from MGM Hospital, Vashi to Fortis Hospital, Mulund by the traffic authorities in order to transport the preserved heart within 14 minutes. The heart was successfully harvested by Fortis Hospital, Mulund’s Dr Sanjeev Jadhav, Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgeon, and rushed to the hospital at 04.31 AM. The convoy moved from MGM Hospital, Vashi following Thane – Belapur Road – Airoli Junction to reach Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 04.45 AM. The preserved heart was immediately taken into operation theatre and successfully implanted by Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund.

After the successful surgery, Dr Anvay Mulay said, “We are happy to see the progression of mindsets towards donating organs. It is a great feeling when we see a spurt in this noble cause of organ donation. We salute the courageous families who’ve helped save and enrich lives of much deserving wait-listed patients. The surgery was successful. The patient is now stable and has been moved to the ICU. Next 48-72 hours will be critical and the patient will be monitored round the clock.”
