National Summit on Best Practices in Organ and Tissue Donation organised by Fortis Memorial Research Institute

Fortis Organ Retrieval and Transplant (FORT) organized India’s first National Summit on Best Practices in Organ and Tissue Donation at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) today. The Summit was spearheaded by Dr. Avnish Seth, Director, FORT. The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Dr. (Prof) Jagdish Prasad, DG, Directorate General, Health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. Experts from private and Government agencies from all states in the country involved in the process of organ donation were present at the Summit.

The objective was to bring together experts from all parts of the country to debate and share best practices in organ and tissue donation. New initiatives such as use of smartphones for counseling families of donors, experiences with hand and face transplant, organ care systems for transporting organs after donation and the challenges faced in transportation by road and air were also part of the discussions.

This day-long Summit today follows the launch of the “Wall of Tribute” which took place at the facility on Friday to pay homage to those families who had the courage to say yes to deceased organ donation. Families for four donors were present at the occasion with dignitaries to unveil the Wall. The Gurgaon Police Commissioner, Mr Sandeep Khirwar participated in the event on Friday and said all support required for such a cause would be extended by his department.

The speakers at the event on Saturday included stalwarts such as Dr. Marti Manyalich, President, TPM– DTI Foundation, Spain and President of International Society for Organ Donation and Procurement. He is also Chief, Organ Donation Programme at Spain, which has the highest organ donation rate in the world. Dr Palaniswamy from Royal Darwin Hospital, Australia spoke about the finer aspects of diagnosing brain death. Dr KR Balakrishnan, Fortis Malar Hospital, Chennai who is credited with over 100 heart transplants spoke to the participants about devising an indigenous organ care system to transport the heart. Dr RK Mani, Nayati Healthcare Mathura, and the country’s leading expert on End of Life Care, discussed the possibilities of withdrawal of medical support and DCD in India. The Summit was also attended by luminaries from the healthcare industry such as Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee, Mohan Foundation and Dr. Vimal Bhandari, Director, National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO).
