Navi Mumbaikars walk with Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, to create awareness about Cancer on ‘World Cancer Day’

On the occasion of ‘World Cancer Day’, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi organized a walkathon early morning today in order to create awareness about cancer. The walkathon was organized in association with Brahmaputra Cancer Care Society and ONGC’s Retired People Group. Flagged-off at the Ursav Chowk, Kharghar, the initiative witnessed 500 participants who championed the cause by holding placards and banners covered a distance of 3 kilometers. Dr Tejinder Singh, Oncologist and Dr Manisha Bobade, Facility Director, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi flagged off the Cancer awareness walkathon.

Dr Tejinder Singh said, “The theme of this World Cancer Day – ‘We can & I can’, was guiding principle behind organizing this walkathon. Cancer is a disease that can be prevented with regular screening. However, the general awareness around importance of regular screening among people is abysmally low. All of us participated in this walkathon today with a hope that people became aware about cancer and how best to prevent it.”

Dr Shishir Shetty said, “It is a wonderful to see that many youngsters have joined the walkathon today. Youth can play crucial role in creating awareness about cancer in the society. Dr. Manisha Bobade, Facility Director, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, “The walkathon is an extremely important step towards making a huge impact together as one community. Our fellow Navi Mumbaikars are unaware about how dangerous Cancer can be and the fact that regular screenings & doctor consultations can make a huge difference to the lives of the afflicted. We need to stand together and talk about it. The enthusiastic participation made it successful effort in creating awareness.”

As per National Cancer Registry Programme of National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research, 1 out of 8 men has the possibility of developing cancer in his lifetime (0-74 years).i Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) Cancer registry data, estimated incidences of cancer for 2016 are 14.5 lakh, which is estimated to go up to 17.3 lakh cases by 2020. The number of deaths due to cancer for 2016 are estimated to be around 7.3 lakh which is estimated to go up to 8.8 lakh by 2020.
