Organ Donation at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram

In a rare case, a 52-year-old organ recipient after being declared brain dead donates kidneys and liver to save three

National, 6th October 2021: Doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram facilitated organ donation process from a 52-year-old (male) brain dead patient whose family decided to donated patient’s liver and kidneys.  The patient himself an organ recipient and had undergone a successful liver transplant. The patient suffered from an episode of right sided weakness with slurring of speech. On examination, MRI suggested intra-cranial hemorrhage with midline shift. The patient was put on ventilator support, however despite best efforts, the patient was declared brain dead. The family consented to donate organs – both the kidneys and the liver and the same were allotted by NOTTO to one recipient in FMRI and two recipients at private hospitals in Delhi.

Dr. Anil Mandhani, Executive Director, Urology and Kidney Transplant, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram along with his team conducted the procedure of retrieving both the kidneys and a separate liver team from a private hospital retrieved the Liver. One of the kidney was transplanted at FMRI into a 60-year-old female by Dr Mandhani. Second kidney and Liver were allotted to a 51-year-old female and 54-year-old male respectively to different hospitals in Delhi.

Dr. Mandhani said, “I salute the Deceased donor and his family to have realized the value of organ donation and giving life to many ailing patients. We should all be a part of this noble act of giving life after death by donating organs.  The patients who received the kidneys did not have genuine living donors and they were fighting for life on dialysis for long. But this gentle act of donation gave them new lease of life. This should encourage everyone to come forward and get themselves registered for organ donation.”

Dr. Avnish Seth, Principal Director, Gastroenterology & Hepatobiliary Sciences, Fortis Memorial Research Institute Gurugram and Director, Fortis Organ Retrieval & Transplant (FORT) said, ““The actions of donor family are truly commendable, and we are humbled by their selflessness. Despite their grief, they have ensured their father was able to provide life to three others. We are also indebted to the support we receive from NOTTO, our clinicians and nursing staff, – all who play an imperative role in

In India, the current organ donation rate is less than 1 donor per million population as compared to more than 30 donors per million in most western countries. There is serious shortage of organs and the gap between the number of organs donated and the number people waiting for transplants is ever increasing. Each year, half a million Indians die while waiting for an organ transplant, because no suitable donor can be found for them. That’s a life lost every minute!  There is a need to spread the word that each one of us has the potential to be an organ donor, and we all have the power to influence 9 lives by donating our heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and eyes. Pledge to donate your organs and tissues at www.notto.gov.in
