Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Conduct Life-saving PaedCard Transplant on a Young Brave Heart

Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, conducted yet another successful heart transplantation procedure on a 15yr old male, today. Marking Maharashtra’s 6th Paediatric Cardiac Heart Transplant, and 26th overall, to have taken place at the same venue since the first heart transplant took place in August last year.

Suffering from Restricted Cardiomyopathy, the recipient was waitlisted at Fortis Hospital, Mulund for six months and was struggling with the condition for over a year. As the young recipients’ parents awaited transplant surgery, the child got a second chance at life after a 19yr old male was declared brain dead at Surat’s Ayush ICU & Multi-specialty Hospital, Surat following an Intracranial Bleed caused due to head injury. Upon being counseled by Mr Nilesh Mandlewala, President, NGO Donate Life, the family of the brain dead youth consented to donate his Heart, Liver, Kidneys, Pancreas and Corneas. Retrieved by team of doctors at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, the donor heart was flown to Fortis Hospital, Mulund in a helicopter in 1hr and 50mins, covering a distance of 312kms.

On success of yet another PaedCard transplant, conducting surgeon Dr Vijay Agarwal, Chief of Paediatirc Cardiac Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “Finding the perfect match for a PeadCard transplant recipient – in terms of size and blood group, requires immense efforts to me be made by the Medical Social Workers. Dexterous medical management of the recipient till a donor organ is made available is of utmost importance too.” He further added, “The surgery has been successfully concluded, the patient is now stable and will be kept under observation for the next 48-72 hours. We are really proud of the donor, a brave boy whose inspiring story, will touch the hearts of millions across the country and will give a ray of hope to other young wait-listed patients.”

Talking about this development, Dr S Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “We are indebted to the donor family, whose support to the cause of Organ Donation has enabled our team of Clinicians to conduct this life-saving transplant surgery. I thank all stakeholders involved in the process from retrieval, transport and transplant.” She further added, “With awareness about the cause of Organ Donation reaching its fruition by surpassing Cadaveric Donation numbers for the city, for the previous years; the city and the state is progressively inching towards balancing the DonorRecipient numbers.”

Airport and Traffic Authorities of both cities swung into action to lay the Green Corridor between Surat and Mumbai for transportation of the heart. With the roadmap and the flight map laid, the donor heart left Ayush ICU & Multi-specialty Hospital, Surat at 08.50AM, reaching Surat Airport at 09.09AM. The preserved heart was transferred into a helicopter that took off at 09.14AM; landing at Mumbai Airport at 10.12AM and into Fortis’ OT at 10.39AM The Green Corridor ensured that the donor heart reached Fortis Hospital in 1hr 50mins covering 312Kms.

With 26 heart transplants, adult and paediatric, being conducted in thirteen months, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, has emerged as a preferred centre for heart transplant surgeries in the state. On the back of its clinical expertise and the sustained Organ Donation awareness programs, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, has been instrumental in bringing about a progressive mindset-shift towards the noble cause.
