Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Give New Life to 46 year Old in City’s 35th Heart Transplant

The team of doctors from Fortis Hospital, Mulund successfully transplanted a heart to save the life of a 46year old male, today. With active cooperation from Clinicians and Medical Social Workers in Indore and Mumbai, this 2nd interstate heart transplant between Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra became possible. The live heart was transported in 2 hours covering a distance of 566 kms. The team was led by Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, marking 35th heart transplant of the city.

The recipient from Alibaug in Raigad was suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy and had been
waitlisted since the past two months. The donation became possible when a 45yr old male was declared brain dead following a road traffic accident. Following counselling to the family of the patient, they decided to donate his organs. The donor is survived by his parents, wife and two children.

From Suyash Hospital, Indore, where the donor was declared brain dead, he was subsequently moved to Choithram Hospital, Indore, for further evaluation and assessment. After his family consented for the donation, Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, rushed from Mumbai to Indore to harvest the donor heart. With coordination and cooperation from multiple key stakeholders, the live heart was transferred out of Choithram Hospital at 11:16AM before it was finally airlifted from Indore at 11:39 AM. The plane landed at Mumbai at 12:53PM covering a distance of 566 Kms in 2 hrs. In the final leg of the transfer, the live heart was transported in an ambulance to reach Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 01:16 PM for an immediate transplant.

Speaking at the juncture of Mumbai’s record number of heart transplants, Dr Anvay Mulay said, “We have nothing but the greatest appreciation and respect for the donor’s family who took a decision to save lives at the time of grief and personal loss. The surgery has been concluded and the recipient is now stable. We will continue to monitor him in the ICU for the next 48 to 72 hours.”

Talking about the surgery, Dr S Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund said, “This is truly a heartwarming moment for all of us at Fortis Mulund. It has strengthened the transplant channel

whose tireless made efforts to save this precious life.”

Swift coordination between CISF Indore & Mumbai, Traffic, Police and Airport Authorities helped enable smooth organ transfer. Hon. Sanjay Dubey (IAS), Commissioner Indore Division & Founder – Indore Society for Organ Donation, spearheaded the organ transfer efforts at Indore. The live heart reached Fortis Hospital, Mulund following the Green Corridor route laid out from Domestic Airport (Gate No. 8) to Military Road - Santacruz Chembur Link Road - Chedda Nagar to Eastern Express Highway - Airoli Junction – Mulund.
