Young Mumbaikar Given a New lease of life by Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund

Surgeons at Fortis Hospital, Mulund successfully transplanted a donor heart into a 30yr old female recipient, in fourth efficacious intrastate heart transplant from Pune to Mumbai. The harvested organ was transferred within 1hr 6mins, covering a distance of 133.52kms, to Mumbai for the surgery conducted by Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund.

The recipient from Buldhana, Maharashtra, suffering from Postpartum Dilated Cardiomyopathy with Atrial Septal Defect; was waitlisted for a transplant for over three months and a heart transplant surgery was essential to save her life. The surgery became possible when a 31yr old male suffering from Intracranial Bleed caused due to a cyst and Obstructed Hydrocephalus was declared Brain Dead at Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune. Patient’s kin consented to donate his Heart, Liver and Kidneys, enabling four life-saving surgeries.

Conducting surgeon Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, “The patient has been moved to the ICU and will be kept under observation for the next 48-72 hours. We hope that this encouraging story inspires many more to come forth and join the cause, the act will enable many more life-enriching surgeries”.

Talking about the successful surgery, Dr S. Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund said, “Citizens from all walks of life are now seen joining hands for the cause, it is indeed encouraging for the waitlisted patients. We truly believe that with sustained efforts towards the cause, we are steadily moving towards bridging the donor-recipient gap”.

Airport and Traffic Authorities of both the cities swiftly laid the Green Corridor between Pune and Mumbai; with the help of the roadmap and the flight map, the donor heart harvested by Dr Sanjeev Jadhav, CVTS Surgeon, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, left Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune at 11.38AM, reaching Pune Airport at 11.50AM. The preserved heart was transferred into a chartered flight that took off at 11.55AM, landing at Mumbai Airport at 12.20PM. The ambulance carrying the donor heart reached Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 12.43PM and into the OT at 12.44PM.
